Creative Fashion for Special Occasions

Creative Fashion | Special Occasions

In your twenties, every weekend requires you to dress up and make an appearance in your best little cocktail dress and sky high heels. With a decent amount of clothes that you continuously wear and a never ending stream of snaps being plastered all over social media, sometimes you want change things up, buy something new or try something different. Whenever I have an event coming up, I start to go through different outfits In my head. I love to match different items of clothes from different parts of my wardrobe and surprise myself with what I can come up with. For example, I have some H&M high waisted tailored black pants that I wear to work at least once a week. These fit so incredibly well and hug my body in all of the right places, as they are a little sexy, I try to wear a longer business shirt over them to work with some cute flats or pumps to finish off the business look. A few weekends ago I had a night planned for my best friends birthday and as I didn’t want to tan my legs for this night, I planned to wear these pants. As I had always worn them as a typical business look, I thought to myself, how can I make these look sexier, edgier and yet still classy for a girls night out. Sc-rummaging through my wardrobe, I chose a black and white of the shoulder crop top, a sleek black belt, red heels and a red scarf to tie around my neck (so very French girl)! I absolutely loved this look and the pants were the perfect touch to this Friday night city bar outfit.

So the point of that story is that sometimes you don’t always need a new outfit, you can just adjust it slightly to make it look different. One thing I love doing is adding a white blouse underneath a jumpsuit or a fitted dress for a Friday at work; I then proceed to take the blouse off and add a red lip and high heel for a night look. When it comes to clubbing, weddings, engagement parties & birthdays, I love to experiment with my own wardrobe before buying a new outfit. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes a wedding or engagement party comes along and I find an outfit that I just have to buy, but usually ill try to save the money!

Hitting the Clubs

Going out on Saturday for a big night out? Need some outfit inspiration?

What I love to do is find outfits that you typically wouldn’t see being worn by every single girl out in the city. There is nothing I can't stand more than going out and seeing every second girl in the same Kookai body con skirt and skimpy crop top to match it! Such a plain, boring and over commercialized look that people hype up more than they should. Each to their own & I know I’m being controversial here! Sure, it’s ok to follow popular trends, but make it your own by being creative and matching items with different statement pieces that every other girl doesn’t have.

I love shopping overseas at little boutiques and even op shops for some vintage finds; as well as this, TopShop, Zara and Next have provided me with some amazing statement pieces that I always try to incorporate into my outfits – this ensures that even if it  is a mass produced item, not everyone in your city will be wearing it. Some good examples of these statement pieces that I have collected over the years are; a cream faux fur vest from Armani Xchange in the USA, an embellished A-line skirt from Next, edgy studded ankle boots from TopShop & a green faux leather overall style dress from Primark. I then mix and match these types of items with basics when I go out, this changes up the look of the outfit so it doesn’t look as obvious that it’s the same dress etc. For example; I have a simple black silk slip dress from Zara that I wear to death!!!! Sometimes on the weekend with a denim jacket and white runners or to work with a blazer and loafers.

You know my studded ankle boots from TopShop that I mentioned before? Well, last weekend I had a friends birthday and I wore the slip dress, the studded ankle boots, a large belt with a big buckle and a simple red lip! One dress styled and worn so many different ways. Another item I love is high waisted tailored shorts! Any colour & print, they look amazing in winter with black tights and boots, or in summer with a crop top and sandals. Wear them out clubbing with a tight bodysuit underneath – your hair in a slicked and polished low bun - & cream coloured pumps! I love this look sooo much as it’s timeless, elegant yet extremely sexy as those legs are being showed off to the max!

Below are some looks I absolutely love for clubbing – stylish, creative, comfortable & one of a kind 😊

Weddings

Ok, ok, I adore the wedding season.
Typically around spring & summer, there is an endless list of weddings each year (especially when you’re in your 20’s). It can be so hard knowing what to wear and if you’re anything like me you scroll through Pinterest and Instagram for some inspiration. Since weddings are typically an all day thing it’s important first and foremost to be comfortable! I made the mistake once I wearing the most skin tight blue dress with sky high heels that killed my feet about 2 hours into the day. I could hardly sit down, eat or walk in this dress and there is no way I would ever wear something like this again!!
So… what do you wear?

Jumpsuits are an amazing outfit choice for a wedding as it doesn’t matter how much you eat or drink, no one can’t see your tummy popping under the pressure 😉. They’re also sophisticated yet simple and pretty for a wedding day. Short tight mini skirts or dresses are a big no no, opt for a ¾ dress that either slightly hugs your figure or has a full skirt (think 50s style)! Another outfit idea is high waisted floral or brightly printed pants with a body suit underneath this is so simple yet lady like for a family filled event.

Engagement Parties

Similarly to weddings, think lady like, classic and appropriate. These events might not contain members of your family, but they do contain mothers & fathers, aunts & uncles, grandpas & grandmothers of the couple holding the event. Whether it is admitted or not, they are judging the couples friends (meaning you!), and first impressions do count! Firstly, just like to a wedding … never wear white 😉, unless the invitation gives a dress code asking you to wear white as the bride is wearing a colour. I’ve been to an engagement party like this and it was a wonderful idea, completely inappropriate any other time though 😊

For some reason when I think engagement parties, I think opulent colours such as gold and other metallics. Of course, you don’t have to wear these colours, they’re just sophisticated party patterns! Usually, for engagement parties I would always opt for colour over monochrome – I would also try to always wear a longer skirt or pants that I’m comfortable enough in to wear in front of older generations. When I know I’m going to such an event, I always try to imagine what was beautiful and elegant in their time, think silver screen sirens like Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner & Vivien Leigh. I personally love this time period and sometimes wish I was born back in such a simple era.

Of course in saying everything above, still be yourself and i'm not saying to dress for someone else's likes and dislikes - just make sure you're comfortable !

Music Concerts

Whether it's pop, rock, techno or jazz, whenever I think music concert I automatically think leopard print, studs, boots, leather, rock T-shirts and faux fur coats! I recently went to see the Weekend here in Brisbane Australia - I went mainly with the idea of comfort in mind; I wore an embroidered leather jacket with studs, heeled leather ankle boots, and a simple black jumpsuit. I added a black lace choker to the mix, had my hair up in a ponytail and wore little to no makeup.

Mixing sleek, studs, leather and black without becoming Gothic is quite a challenge, but the way I do it is focus more so on my makeup. By that cryptic message I simply mean go easy on the makeup, light, fresh and glowy with natural hair just like Kaia in the first picture below!

With natural makeup and a rock chic outfit, you'll definitely look the part at any concert - and don't forget that with all of the dancing around you're bound to sweat, so therefore, the less makeup you have on the better!
